I learned how to play poker in January of 2012. By the time I joined the party, online poker had long seen its blackest day. It was a very confusing time for me, because I was too shy to go into a casino and sit at a table, and all the poker sites would tell me I could only play for fake money since I was located in the US.
It was only after some roundabout research that I realized there was a huge crack down the year before and I was going to be stuck playing Zynga Poker until I got up the guts to play live.
In July of 2012, I took a Profitable No Limit Hold ‘Em class at School of Cards and was pretty much pushed to take the leap and start playing for real money, in a real casino. There was no way I was going to have paid hundreds of dollars for a class and then not go and test my skills.
I remember how much I was shaking the first time I sat down at a $1/$2 table at the Borgata. I’m pretty much a complete dork, so beforehand I did some really extensive research regarding the etiquette of playing poker at a casino. How do I get chips? How do I get a seat? Are there any special things I need to do before I can start to play? I learned about posting vs. allowing the big blind to come around to me. I prepared myself with practical information but nothing could prepare me for the overwhelming feeling of putting $300 real dollars on the poker table and getting down to business for the first time ever.
We got to the casino very late on a Thursday night, at around 11:30pm. At the end of the night (less than 4hrs later), I left with $749. I was ecstatic.
That day has been imprinted in my memory forever, and very soon I’ll have another “first time” experience to add to my poker career.
On November 26th 2013 playing online poker for real money becomes legally available in New Jersey after a trial period that begins on November 21st.
Unfortunately for me, I’ll be going down to North Carolina on that day for Thanksgiving, but I already know what I’m doing the following weekend. All I have to do now is figure out how I can get a reliable, fast internet connection in New Jersey. Maybe I can use my phone as a modem? Who knows! What I do know is that I am. So. Fucking. Excited.
Do you have any special poker memories?
